“Hana“ Exhibition presenting the life of the Slovak female writer Hana Gregorová (1885–1958) is the first monographic and memory exhibition devoted to this personality. Its opening will be held on the occasion of the upcoming 140th anniversary of the writer‘s birth that we will commemorate at the end of January 2025.
The ambition of the exhibition is to provide a comprehensive view of Hana Gregorová‘s life and of all important areas of her self-expression with a particular attention to historic and social context. At the same time, the authors of the exhibition have set themselves the goal to free the image of Hana Gregorová from the usual frameworks – Jozef Gregor Tajovský‘s wife or radical feminist. In spite of the fact that the research of Hana Gregorová‘s life is still on-going in the collections of Slovak memory institutions (museums, archives, libraries, galleries), the exhibition covers all stages of her life and areas of her activities – both in public and private spheres.
The public will have the opportunity to dive into results of extensive research into the life of this significant figure, female writer, journalist, activist and last but not least a feminist. These results are presented in a very attractive way in terms of exhibition procedures. An important bridge between the exhibition and the present will be created by a series of items and acticities of various formats – from present-day works of art and video interviews all the way up to the interactive activity for the visitors focusing on the reflection of today‘s status of women in the Slovak society. In general, the exhibition is a direct reaction to Hana Gregorová‘efforts to elevate the social status of women and shows that many issues that Hana opened up through her literary work, newspaper articles, lectures and public speeches are relevant even today.
In addition to core collection items of the Bratislava City Museum, the exhibition will also comprise objects and documents from several Slovak museums, galleries and archives, as well as objects borrowed from private collections. Most exhibits, including several artworks that are directly linked to Hana Gregorová, will be displayed in public for the first time.
The exhibition will be accompanied also by a publication of a book that will consist of scholarly texts resulting from the research that became the basis of the exhibition project. Its publication is planned for the first quarter of 2025.
