Secret of the Red Crayfish Pharmacy
History and modern services under one roof.
The renovated space of the "U červeného raka" Pharmacy combines the atmosphere of a preserved Baroque pharmacy with modern visitor services. The pharmacy is located in the historic premises of a late Baroque townhouse, which was built in the moat of the city fortifications. Part of the building still consists of a converted medieval barbican—an important defensive element of the city walls.
For many years, the pharmacy housed a pharmaceutical exhibition, to which the original dispensary furnishings and Baroque-Classicist frescoes still pay homage today. Today, this renovated space provides comprehensive visitor services for St. Michael’s Tower—from ticket and souvenir sales to luggage storage, as well as a place to relax and enjoy one’s time.
A new addition is an exhibition space dedicated to the theme of Bratislava’s medieval defenses, which seamlessly connects to the exhibition in St. Michael’s Tower. The space was also designed with accessibility in mind, so that even those who cannot reach St. Michael’s Tower due to barriers can enjoy its contents.
The U červeného raka Pharmacy is a new, high-quality, and accessible public space in the center of Bratislava. It is open to everyone—whether you want to relax, meet up with friends, or learn about the city’s history. During the warmer months, the U červeného raka Summer Reading Room, managed by the Bratislava City Library, is also available to you.
