Secret of the Red Crayfish Pharmacy
The exhibition of the Museum of Pharmacy is located in a part of the premises of the former Red Crayfish Pharmacy on the ground floor of the late Baroque town house built in the barbican of the St. Michael’s Gate with adjacent moat. In the 18th century, a Roccoco portal was added to the façade of the house and later on, the façade was modified in the Classical style. On the ground floor original painted signs of the pharmacy are on display dating back to the end of the 19th century and made by a well-known Bratislava smith company Márton. Original furniture of the office dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, when a new laboratory was built in the moat and annexed to the pharmacy.
The pharmacy called Red Crayfish is said to be established already in the 14th century. From the mid-18th century it was run on the ground floor of the abovementioned building until its closure in 1953 when it was determined for the museum purposes. In 1960 contemporary Bratislava City Museum opened an exhibition in all four rooms of the former pharmacy. In 1980 the premises of the exhibition were extended to include also the 2nd floor, which presents the development of the pharmacy in Bratislava from the 14th century up to the mid-20th century. In September 2001, the Museum had to move out the exhibition from the house due to the ownership change and plans of the house restoration. After a pause of several years, it was decided to modify a part of the ground floor for exhibition purposes and in 2006 a new, significantly curtailed presentation titled Vessels for preserving medicines was open.
